Smear of sputum (Papanicolaou stain, Medium power) The cytoplasm of tumor cells is large in size and irregularly round in shape. The cytoplasm is eosinophilic or stained with Orange G. with squamous cell carcinoma located in the hilus of the lung the number of cells is many leading to a better chance of diagnosis from sputum smear.
