Macroscopic view: Occluding the lower lobe branch of the pulmonary artery is a white embolus (arrow), or pulmonary embolus. Parenchyma peripheral to the embolus becomes necrotic and hemorrhagic (hemorrhagic infarction) with accompanying atelectasis.
