Macroscopic view (atherosclerotic complex lesion): Loss of elasticity of the aorta, advanced calcification and ulceration are seen (arrow). Ulcerative atherosclerotic lesion with focal thrombus formation is observed. The latter complications, in conjunction with fatty streaks, are termed “atherosclerotic complex lesions.” Please compare the atherosclerotic complex lesion with the nearly normal aorta as shown as the lower part of the figure.
