Macroscopic view; The kidney is enlarged. On cut section, numerous small cysts give the kidney a sponge-like appearance. As kidney function in utero is decreased this results is lower than normal production of amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios) which can have further consequences on fetal development (Lung hypoplasia, Potter sequence in the neonate)
