Gross findings (left: surface of the kidney, middle: cut surface of the kidney, right: cut surface of the liver): Autosomal dominant (adult type) polycystic kidney disease is a hereditary disease, in which the kidneys are enlarged with numerous cysts (blue dotted lines). In advanced stage, the patients develop renal failure. In addition to the renal disease, this disease causes multiple liver cysts (right) and intracranial aneurysms. The liver is also enlarged with various-sized cysts, which contain concentrated bile juice (yellow dotted line). In cases associated with intracranial aneurysm, attention should be paid for subarachnoid hemorrhage.
