- ★(10)Aortic dissection (dissecting aortic aneurysm)
Microscopic image (EVG stain, low power view): This patient had Marfan syndrome complicated by aortic dissection. There is a dissection in outer third of the intima close to the medial layer. Marked loss of elastic lamellae on the intimal side and severe cystic medial degeneration are identified. EVG method (elastic fibers stain) stains elastic fibers black, collagen fibers red and muscle, red blood cells and cytoplasmic contents yellow. It is a potent tool to evaluate the degree of fibrosis and the condition of elastic lamellae of vessels.
