Macroscopic view; The diverticulum structure can be seen in the center of the screen, marked with an arrow. It forms a pouch like diverticulum 1 to 2 cm long running along the anti-mesenteric side of the ileum, but has also been reported extend up until the navel in some cases. The mucosal lining of the diverticulum may be similar to that of the rest of the ileum, or it may contain areas resembling the mucosa of stomach or pancreatic tissue. In the latter case foci of gastric mucosa in the diverticulum may result in peptic ulcers occurring in the diverticulum.
