Macroscopic view: Joint disease caused by an unbalance between joint strength and loading. Most frequently observed in those over 40 years and localized to the knee and hip joints. Characterized by cumulative wearing down of the joint cartilage with disease progression. The complete loss of joint cartilage at the surface of bone head can be observed with the underlying bone is directly exposed. Marginal joint cartilage remains in the peripheral areas although its surface is rough.
