Macroscopic view: Mild degree of emphysema. Areas with anthracotic pigment deposition and parenchymal destruction are accompanied by air space enlargement. Anthracotic pigment normally drains via the lymphatics but accumulates due to destruction of the lymphatic vascular tissue (blue arrow). Beneath the visceral pleura, emphysematous bullae are forming (red arrow).
